I have a new website dedicated to the wildlife that visits our garden, it's called "Our Garden Wildlife" so if your interested in what we find in our garden then please take a look. As I say it's new so there is only one post so far.
A few weeks ago we planted some Daffodils, The cold snap has stunted there growth, Some have started to flower while others haven't even start. We moved some onto the windowsill out side to get more sunlight, After a couple of weeks they were still looking a bit wilted, We brought one Daffodil inside and put tat in the window, Within a few hours it had perked up and was stood up straight, Now a week later it has grown to a whopping 60cm (23.62") tall, Is this the tallest Daffodil in Yorkshire or even the world?
PondThis week we are trying to get some jobs done around the house and garden, today we took some of the water out of our pond and put some fresh water in, we don’t have any kind of oxygenating things in our pond. We have loads of snails in it and a load of some jelly stuff we think it is either snail or newt eggs we are not sure but as we have more snails than newts we think it’s more likely snail eggs. Compost
I took a look at our compost heap and decided to turn it over as I did we saw hundreds of worms, I’ve never seem so many in one go in my life before. We decided to split the compost in to two halves, one that’s ready and one that on the go. After I finished what I did yesterday on the raised bed I was stood looking at it and thought it might be a better idea to make a greenhouse instead. So today when I got home from work I started to cut the centre pieces off that would make the doorway and the spare 2.4 mtr length I had I cut in half and used that to make 2 smaller raised beds. Now this is how it looks. Next I will get some 2 x 1” wood and make a framework around the beds and to this I will attach the fine mesh, I will also be adding a door. Last week I got hold of a 2.4 mtr pallet I took the feet off it and cut it into 3 lengths each length had 3 slats in it, I had the idea of making a raised bed to replace the triangular ones we had last year. Pictured left. With the weather being good this Sunday I decided to make a start, I started by taking apart the triangular beds. I sawed one of the pallet lengths in half at 1.2 mtrs I then nailed a 2.4 mtr length to the short pieces. It didn’t take long and as I don’t have all the bits to finish it off this was as far as I could get, My plan is to have some wooden poles in each corner that we can attach some frames that are covered in mesh to stop the slugs eating everything like they did last year. Not much has happened on our walks with Horace over the last few weeks that’s why I haven’t posted anything. Today we pulled up our potatoes and got 2.5 kilo I’m quite pleased with that for our first crop, For next year we are planning on making some potato boxes to grow them in that we can keep topping up with compost as they grow. A few weeks ago I planted a pea just to see if it would grow, It did start to grow and is now a small plant, I made a mesh tube out of some screen printing mesh and put that around the pea plant and made a top for it, It’s all very rough as you can see in the picture below left, This has stopped any chance of slugs getting inside and eating the plant, also it lets in air and water.
For next year we plan to make mesh covers for all our vegetables. We made another raised bed last week and this week we put in 720ltrs of compost and planted the veg that we where growing in the greenhouses, We have to put mesh round the frames to stop the neighbours cats from using then as luxury litter trays. We have got sweet corn, spinach, letuce, sprouts, tomatoes, beetroot and probably something else. We also got a Bluberry bush too.
We got our first crop today,1 Strawberry Looks nice doesn’t it?The rest of the veg are coming on nicely too. We got some poppies off my mother too we just need to plant them. Our pond Had a visit from another frog today, We did have some small frogpoles in but we think they have left now. I got a photo of the frog today. Got up early today and watered the plants then spent most of the time looking in the pond. Saw a dead frog-pole so I took that out, I got a bit concerned about the rest of them and thinking the water might not be good enough, So I poured 2 watering cans full of fresh water in. I also saw a red worm like thing in the pond too, I couldn’t get a photo of it because of the reflection on the water. I got a photo of the dead frog-pole though. I got a bit of video footage of a snail moving under water, Have a look it’s quite interesting to see. Click the image left. |
